when i was younger, i distinctly remember going to school and telling my friends about a song. i said "there's a Song that goes i'm blue, i believe i will die". this is a hilarious misinterpretation of the lyrics of eiffel 65 - blue (da ba dee). it also highlights a misconception i had about music and it's not the only time a kid ever said something like this
the idea is that songs simply are and all songs that exist are part of the imperceptible and intangible "music". that every song is a Capital S Song and that, fucking, eiffel 65 is the Arbiter of Song. this is ludicrous, but it's hard to fault kids for thinking this. after all, they don't get to see the songmaking process. they don't know that every song is a lowercase s song that was made by real people. how could they? besides, this viewpoint holds for most other things. i remember also thinking most manufactured goods just manifested on walmart shelves
now i make music. in some way, i am now the Arbiter of Song. if i release "have sex with your dog" as a satire on the perceptions of the fur community, there's a nonzero chance some kid out there will say "there's a Song that says you should fuck your dog". isn't that something
